Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center recently had the pleasure of hosting a student delegation from Xinya College, Tsinghua University, offering a platform for intellectual exchange and cross-cultural learning. Led by Professor Haipeng Mi from the Academy of Art & Design, the delegation comprised 18 students from diverse academic disciplines, each eager to explore the intersection of sustainable development, regional planning, and international cooperation. The visit provided an opportunity to engage with Bali’s unique socio-economic landscape and its ongoing efforts to balance economic growth with environmental preservation.
A key highlight of the visit was an insightful presentation by Ida Bagus Gede Wesnawa Punia, ST. M.Si from Bali’s Regional Development Planning Board. His discussion shed light on Bali’s multifaceted strategies to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on tourism, agriculture, and sustainable infrastructure. The students participated in an in-depth dialogue on the challenges and opportunities facing the region, as well as the growing influence of Chinese investment in Bali’s economic development. Thought-provoking questions arose about the balance between foreign investment and local sustainability efforts, prompting reflections on how international collaboration can drive responsible progress.
Beyond the academic discussions, the delegation experienced Bali firsthand through a guided campus and island tour. This immersive exploration was complemented by a visit to The Confucius Institute at Udayana University, where students deepened their understanding of cultural and linguistic ties between China and Indonesia. The day fostered a sense of curiosity and connection, reinforcing the importance of global perspectives in shaping sustainable futures. As the visit came to a close, it left an indelible impression on both hosts and visitors, highlighting the enduring value of academic exchange in addressing global challenges.
