The “Future Landscape of AI Research: Influences from Generative AI” symposium took place from November 23 to 25, 2024, at the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center (TSEA) in Bali, Indonesia. This event brought together distinguished experts from various AI research communities, including Natural Language Processing, Information Retrieval, Computer Vision, and Machine Learning. The symposium aimed to examine the transformative impact of Generative AI, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs), on these fields.
Through a series of lightning talks, panel discussions, and collaborative working groups, participants assessed how LLMs are reshaping traditional AI approaches and explored whether AI research is moving towards unified frameworks. Discussions also highlighted emerging interdisciplinary research opportunities, encouraging experts to consider the broader implications of Generative AI across different domains.
A key outcome of the symposium was the co-authored white paper, which outlines future research directions, proposes educational strategies to align curricula with AI advancements, and offers insights to guide the global AI community toward sustainable and ethical innovation. By fostering collaboration and thought leadership, the symposium contributed to shaping the future of AI research in an era increasingly influenced by Generative AI.
