History of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center

Acting on the Global Development Initiative for Achieving UN SDGs

On November 16, 2022, amidst the 17th Group of 20 (G20) summit in Bali, Indonesia, Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center (Tsinghua SEA) proudly inaugurated its campus. The ceremony was graced by esteemed attendees, including Wang Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment, Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, and Cherie Nursalim, Vice Chairman of United in Diversity Foundation (UID), among others.

Forging Ahead on a Vision

Wang Hongwei conveyed that Tsinghua SEA marked a momentous stride within Tsinghua’s global strategy. Collaborating with UID, Tsinghua embarked on talent development, academic exchange, and fulfilling its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Center’s growth, from its inception in 2018, has bolstered talent cultivation, cultural exchanges, and educational programs. Notably, the completion of the Happy Digital X Program in 2021 laid the foundation for nurturing innovative global perspectives.

Cherie Nursalim expressed her excitement about UID and Tsinghua University’s cooperative journey. The Bali Campus emerged as a hub for diverse learning, complementing traditional university studies. The Center wholeheartedly supports participants in networking, capacity building, and fostering innovative solutions that contribute directly to UN SDGs.

Gordon Duff, in his address, welcomed universities worldwide, including Tsinghua, to Bali, fostering collaboration that propels solutions and wisdom for a better future.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Sandiaga Uno lauded the significance of Tsinghua SEA’s Bali campus in enhancing China-Indonesia education cooperation and global innovation endeavors.

After this launch, Tsinghua SEA evolved as a key platform, fostering cooperation between China and Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and the global landscape. Tsinghua eagerly anticipates deepening global collaborations, driving impactful solutions.

Tsinghua’s Bali Campus, an embodiment of four years’ meticulous preparation since its groundbreaking, encompasses 17,000 square meters, spanning five floors. With the official launch, Tsinghua SEA positions itself as a catalyst for shared innovation, education ecosystem development, and meaningful global partnerships.

Since 2018, the Center has spurred personnel training, people-to-people exchanges, and advanced UN SDGs, embodying the ideals of Tsinghua’s global strategy.
